Celebrating the heritage and culture of the Chumash, the Satwiwa Native American Indian Culture Center and Natural Area was established on the site that was home to the Chumash Indians.  Satwiwa, which means “the bluffs”, was the name of a nearby Chumash Village.  Saturdays and Sundays at the center a Native American guest host or park ranger is on hand to answer questions about this unique area.

Rancho Sierra Vista began as ranch land in 1803 and through the years, this 48,672 acre land grant was subdivided and sold to various landowners.  The National Park Service purchased the property in 1980 allowing everyone to enjoy the beautiful trails that wind through the area, including the Big Sycamore Canyon Trail.  This trail is a moderate, somewhat challenging hike of 8 miles from Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa through Big Sycamore Canyon and ending at the ocean.  Other popular trails are an average of 1.5 miles with varying degrees of difficulty.  Enjoy an easy stroll on Satwiwa Loop Trail through grasslands or trek the Trail to the Waterfall which descends into a canyon in the Boney Mountain Sate Wilderness before the trail ascends and leads you to a beautiful waterfall.   (For more information view our brochure here.)
